Vital repairs to car parks in Allonby

Repair work to a number of car parks in and around Allonby has begun today (Tuesday 25 March).

The works are being carried out by Cumberland Council and are estimated to take between five and ten working days to complete. They will address some longstanding damage to the surfaces of the car parks and include regrading and some tarmac patching.

Work on the car parks was not initially due to start until next week, however, the schedule has been brought forward thanks to support from the council’s highways team.

The team have started work in Surfers Car Park today and will then head north to undertake work in West Winds Car Park, Main Car Park (opposite Jack’s Surf Bar), and then Central Car Park (next to the play area). Work to the three car parks immediately north of the village will also be carried out as part of this phase of work.

The car parks in the centre of the village will not all be closed at the same time to ensure disruption to residents, businesses and visitors is kept to a minimum. However, whilst work is ongoing in a particular car park, it will be closed for the duration of the work.

Barbara Cannon, Executive member for Financial Planning and Assets, said: “We are aware there have been issues in some of the parking areas in Allonby and we’ve been working to develop a plan to bring them up to standard. This initial phase of works will help improve the experience for pedestrians and vehicles using these car parks.

“I’d like to thank our parking and highways team for their support in moving these works forward as we head into spring and summer season, which inevitably brings in increased visitors and an economic boost to Allonby and surrounding areas.”
