Literacy Specialists
Orgill English Hub is seeking to recruit outstanding primary teachers to work within our English Hub and work across Cumberland, Westmorland and parts of Lancashire.
Orgill Primary School has been designated as one of 34 English Hubs across England. This network of some of the best performing primary schools has been set up to improve reading standards across the country and improve educational outcomes for the most disadvantaged children.
The Literacy Specialists will be at the heart of our English Hub. They will benefit from a National Teaching Programme in order to become experts in teaching early language and reading in Reception and Key Stage 1. They will provide intensive support to schools across the next academic year. They will have the opportunity to attend Showcase Events at Orgill, usually one per half term. This is an exciting opportunity for ambitious, enthusiastic teachers who strive to impact upon the lives of children in Cumbria and Lancashire. The roles are initially for the academic year 2024-25 but they may continue if the DfE commit to extending funding for the Hub programme.
Participating in the programme will provide a number of benefits to the Literacy Specialists and their schools.
Literacy Specialists will develop:
• Understanding of excellent practice in teaching early language and literacy, with a particular focus on Systematic Synthetic Phonics
• Skills of teaching, planning and assessment in order to effectively support pupils to make excellent progress
• Ability to support teachers, within their own school and in other schools, to improve standards
Literacy Specialists will have the opportunity to work closely with a national provider, the English Hub team and the national and local communities of Literacy Specialists.
The Literacy Specialist’s school will benefit from high quality and sustained support in embedding outstanding early language and literacy teaching across the school.
The successful applicants will:
• Be qualified teachers with some additional status such as reading leader
• Be employed as a primary/infant school teacher
• Have an excellent understanding of early language and reading development
• Have a proven track record of fantastic teaching in reception and/or Key Stage 1, including phonics
• Be passionate about instilling a love of reading in children
• Be able to work collaboratively with others
• Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Literacy Specialists will continue to be based in their own schools and work with the Hub on a regular basis, fully funded at a rate equivalent to that of an SLE. The release time is negotiable in the academic year 2024-25 and there will be training provided, which will be carried out at Orgill or remotely. We are looking for Specialist Teachers from all areas of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire.
Further information can be obtained by emailing orgillenglishhub@orgill.cumbria.sch.uk. If you would like to discuss this opportunity please contact the Hub Lead, Helen Hawley to arrange a visit.
We will welcome visits from potential applicants by appointment only.
