Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) project

Objectives, overview and progress updates for the Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) project.

Update for December 2024

As this year’s earthworks season comes to an end, the Carlisle Southern Link Road project has made great progress with earthworks resuming next Spring.  We will soon be planting trees, shrubs, and hedgerows along the new road route. Drainage works and the numerous structures along the route continue to progress well.

Key achievements for November include:

  • The successful delivery of the steel beams for the east side and central spans of the new Caldew Crossing.
  • Installation of streetlighting and curbing near to the new Durdar roundabout.
  • Beginning to install new fence lines.
  • Lots more surfacing across the project.
  • Beginning construction of the East abutment for the footbridge on the Newby West roundabout.
  • Installation of parapets and precast units to the new West Coast Main Line bridge.
  • Finishing the sandstone work to the footbridges at the new Durdar and Brisco roundabouts.

As we move into December, we will be:

  • Lifting the beams into place on the new Caldew Crossing.
  • Installing streetlighting to the road section between Redcat and Brisco roundabouts.
  • Installation of drainage between Buckabank and Ivegill roads.
  • Surfacing the new road section between Newby West and Dalston Road roundabouts.
  • Finishing the earth retaining wall to the new River Petteril bridge.

Road closures (West to East):

  • Dalston Road remains in place and we now plan to re-open Dalston Road in February 2025.
  • Grace Lane remains closed for utility works.
  • Ratten Row remains closed near to Buckabank Road.
  • Ivegill Road remains closed. Unfortunately, it is too early to give a date for this route to re-open, we hope to provide an update in the January update.

We are working hard to have these roads reopen as soon as possible and understand the frustrations that our works can cause. Where possible, we complete as much of our works offline to reduce disruption to road users, however due to the nature of these particular works, full closures are unavoidable.

Fully signposted diversion routes are in place for all closures and information regarding all traffic management associated with the project including diversion routes can be found on our roadworks section. You can also keep up to date with weekly traffic management bulletins on the Carlisle Southern Link Road Facebook page.

As part of our multi-million-pound investment in the infrastructure of the Carlisle Southern Link Road, we are equally as committed to invest in our local communities. We are working with our partners to ensure we add social value back into the county. Activities in December will include:

  • Taking part in mock interviews and promoting careers within the construction industry to the whole of the county.
  • Supporting school pupils with their Geography fieldwork.
  • Fundraising for the Carlisle Foodbank’s Christmas hamper appeal.
  • Fundraising for Eden Valley Hospice.
  • Sponsorship of the annual Santa Dash
