Permit scheme for road and street works activities

Part 3 of the Traffic Management Act 2004 (TMA) introduced permit schemes. These schemes are a way of managing road and street works activities, improving our ability to minimise disruption and coordinate activities.

Objectives of the permit scheme

The scheme objectives include:

  • reducing safety hazards and incidents in and around works sites
  • reducing the negative impact of works on local residents and/or businesses 
  • reducing the negative impact of works on disabled people and/or public transport users
  • protecting the structure of the street and apparatus within it, in a way that helps manage long-term maintenance costs
  • greater cooperation and collaboration between different works promoters
  • reducing the environmental impact of works (less noise, greater cleanliness, more recycling of materials)
