Cumberland Sports Village

A new stadium, to be shared by Workington Town RLFC and Workington AFC, who are known as Workington Reds.

A new stadium, to be shared by Workington Town RLFC and Workington AFC, who are known as Workington Reds, will be built on the site of the current Reds’ ground at Borough Park. In addition, a community pitch will be created on neighbouring Lonsdale Park, the site of the former greyhound track.

Background

This project has been made possible by £5.4 million from the Town Deal and £1 million from Cumberland Council. The funding from the Town Deal will fund an initial phase of development with further phases being subject to additional funding being secured.

The design and capacity for the sports village has still to be finalised but it will include extensive community facilities and a hospitality and retail offer.

A separate company, Cumberland Sports Village Company, has been set up to facilitate the plans. The Council provided an initial £50K grant to enable the Sports Village company to finalise the business plan and has released grant funding worth £235,000 as part of the Workington Town Deal. This will be used to draw up the detailed plans, instruct the architects and bring in the expertise of other experts to prepare the planning documents. It is expected that the application will be made by Autumn 2024.

Allerdale Investment Partnership is involved, offering pro bono advice, and a big-hitting Board will also be created so experienced ‘guides’ will help the process.

A key part of our overall strategy will enable Cumberland Sports Village and both clubs to attract and secure levels of investment and partnerships that they would not ordinarily find easy. CSV will work in the community in conjunction with Government agencies and corporate businesses and they will pay CSV to deliver their environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives on the ground.

It is hoped that the development of the sports village will commence in 2024 following the completion of design work and the grant of planning permission. A dedicated website has been launched to keep sports fans and local residents up to date.
