What we do

After the payment is received, we will start to process your application and keep you informed of progress.

The application will be granted if it:

  • complies with the British Standard BS7666 data entry conventions
  • complies with our policy on street naming and numbering
  • does not meet with any objections

If the application is accepted, we will notify:

  • the emergency services
  • internal council departments
  • all relevant bodies, including Royal Mail, which is responsible for allocating postcodes

Naming of streets and houses

If you are developing a large estate, you will need to make an application as soon as you start work on site. This is to make sure we start processing the naming of any new street and the numbering of your new properties without any delays.

Private houses

If your property is already numbered, you can additionally name your property as long as it does not repeat the name of the road or any existing property in the area.

You will not need to contact us as the name of the property will not officially be included as the property address. The property number must still be displayed and referred to in all correspondence.

For example:

"My House" (not part of official address)
1 My Road (official address)
Town
County
Postcode

Numbering houses

Individual properties are generally built on:

  • infill land
  • large gardens
  • a site of previously demolished properties

These will be numbered within the existing sequence if possible. House names will be used if necessary.

Where building takes place on the site of a demolished property, the new building will inherit the existing number.

Renaming or renumbering of houses

You will need to make an application to rename your property if your property has an allocated name as part of the official address instead of an allocated number.
