Types of rubbish and recycling bins

Types of household and communal bins, bags and boxes in the Allerdale, Carlisle and Copeland area and what to put in them.

General rubbish bins

We provide a refuse service from residential properties. This waste is usually collected in a 120 litre black bin, but you may have another type depending on the area you live in.

What you can put in your general waste:

  • non recyclable films and plastics
  • tetra packs (they can't be recycled via our kerbside recycling service)
  • fish and meat bones
  • disposable nappies
  • pet waste, hair and bedding
  • food waste you don't compost
  • bagged cool ashes and vacuum dust
  • tea and coffee grounds

What you cannot put in your bin:

  • rubble and building materials
  • electrical goods
  • hazardous waste
  • empty or leftover paint tins
  • batteries and vapes
  • plastic cans and glass
  • garden waste
  • paper and cardboard

Extra waste can be taken free of charge to a Household Waste and Recycling Centre

Please don’t put loose ash into your waste bins.

When bins are emptied, the ash can blow over our crews, which not only creates a mess but also poses a health risk. Ash can contain carcinogens, which are harmful and can increase the risk of cancer. To help keep our teams safe, please make sure any ash is completely cooled and securely bagged before disposal.
