When you need a personal licence, who can apply, how to apply, costs and fees.

Who can apply

A personal licence makes sure that anyone running or managing a business that sells or supplies alcohol does so responsibly and professionally.

When you need a personal licence

You must apply for a personal licence under the Licensing Act 2003, if you:

  • are the named designated premises supervisor (DPS) on a premises licence
  • want to sell alcohol at a premises that holds a premises licence
  • want to get more than 5 Temporary Event Notices in a year

You do not need a personal licence if:

  • you are working in a pub or other business that sells alcohol
  • you are a qualified club or premises operating under a Temporary Event Notice (TEN)

You can only hold one personal licence at a time.
