A vehicle licence is valid for 12 months. You must renew it before it expires.
To apply for a new vehicle licence, you need:
- your V5C certificate or proof of purchase
- a valid MOT certificate, if applicable
- your vehicle insurance certificate
- vehicle inspection certificates
To renew your vehicle, you will need to complete the online application on the Licensing Portal.
Renew your driver vehicle licence
Before submitting your application, make sure you have all the necessary information to hand.
We recommend submitting your application and evidence at least 2 weeks before you want to start using the vehicle.
Pay for your renewal
You can pay your taxi and private hire vehicle licence fee by debit or credit card.

Your renewal application
We will only consider an application when:
- the online form has been submitted
- all required evidence has been submitted
- full payment has been made
Plates
When applying for a renewal, you must return your existing plates when collecting your new one.
You must return your plates immediately if they have been suspended. The vehicle will not be reinstated until the plates have been returned.
