Youth Justice Services require a high level of skilled face-to-face contact with young people, their families, their victims and those who have to pass sentence in our courts. Our staff are our greatest asset, and the partnership is committed to further improvements in its arrangements for the induction, training, supervision and appraisal of the staff who work in the Youth Justice Services (YJS).
Working with children and young people
We help:
- assist at the police station, providing an appropriate adult to those who are aged 16 and under
- to support children and young people at risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour by offering prevention support
- to support children and young people on out of court disposals preventing them from entering the formal criminal justice system
- to support young people and their families at court
- to supervise young people who are bailed by the courts, during sentence and on release
- with arrangements for a young person who is placed in care by the courts
- young people serving a community sentence, read about community sentences (GOV.UK)
- young people sentenced to custody, read about custody (GOV.UK)
- young people to understand the effects of their crime
- parents or carers to understand their responsibilities
Cumberland Youth Justice Service is one of 157 Youth Justice Teams in England and Wales. At a national level, the Youth Justice Board has a statutory duty to monitor the effectiveness of the youth justice system and give advice to ministers. In order to fulfil its duty, the Board sets performance targets for Youth Justice Services (YJS) and monitors their work. The Board provides additional financial support to YJS partnerships in the shape of ring-fenced grants to promote good practice and/or to develop new services.

Management and placement of the service
Located within the Cumberland Children's Services Directorate, Cumberland Youth Justice Service remains a discrete service with responsibility for its own budget and planning. The YJS is represented on a range of partnership groups and strategic boards, ensuring a balanced approach between a focus on children and young people, and the criminal justice system.
Cumberland YJS is overseen by a Management Board.
The Management Board provides strategic direction and coordinates the provision of youth justice services by Cumberland Youth Justice Service and partner organisations.
The Board is made up of appropriate representatives who attend and participate in meetings. The Board ensures the provision of accurate and timely data returns, both for its own use and that of the national Youth Justice Board. It gives support and guidance to YJS manager and holds them to account. It ensures that the Youth Justice Plan is implemented.
