Home Upgrade Grant phase 2 (HUG2)

HUG2 is a government grant scheme to improve the energy performance and heating systems of off gas grid homes in England.  Off gas grid homes are those that do not use mains gas for heating, they may instead be using oil, LPG, coal, wood, or electric heating systems.

The scheme is funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and is delivered by Local Authorities.

HUG2 in Cumbria is being delivered as a consortium between Westmorland & Furness Council and Cumberland Council, which is led by Westmorland & Furness Council. Delivery of the scheme is running from April 2023 until March 2025.

Applications for this scheme are now closed

The scheme is now fully subscribed and therefore we are unable to accept any new applications. Delivery of the scheme will continue until 31 March 2025 for existing applications.

Information for existing applicants

  • Our delivery partner for HUG2 in Cumberland is Procast Building Contractors Ltd, and for the remainder of the scheme, Procast are working with JPG Surveyors Ltd to complete property assessments.
  • Bookings for initial property assessments, subsequent technical surveys and installations will be made directly by the delivery partners.
  • If your home is assessed and is found to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of A, B, or C, then we will unfortunately not be able to progress your application further. Part of the scheme criteria is that your home has an EPC rating of D or below, as the scheme aims to improve your EPC to a rating of C.
  • If your home is assessed and is found to have mains gas heating installed, even if it is broken or unused, then we will not be able to progress your application any further. Properties that have mains gas for cooking appliances only can still proceed.
  • The improvement measures you may be offered will depend on several factors, including but not limited to; the current and future energy performance of the property, structural condition, regulation and planning compliance, and funding criteria of the grant scheme as set out by DESNZ.
  • It is common when installing insulation that additional ventilation will need to be installed to prevent damp and mould issues. This is a regulatory requirement, and funding will not be approved by DESNZ without it.
  • Following the appropriate surveys, our delivery partners will contact you to discuss the planned improvement measures. Your written consent will be required before installation can commence. We will contact you and provide the required consent form.
