Cumberland Council confirms that essential works are progressing to address erosion along the River Caldew near Sheepmount Bridge. As part of the project, a crane has been brought to the site and is placing rock bags at the foot of the eroded riverbank.
The works, which are scheduled for completion by Christmas, are critical for protecting property and addressing erosion while ensuring accessibility for local residents, businesses, and park users. This initiative reinforces Cumberland Council’s commitment to maintaining public safety and enhancing community spaces.
The works are being carried out from Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 5.00pm, with no weekend work. Temporary traffic management measures are in place on Mayor’s Drive, though pedestrian and cyclist routes remain unaffected.
Access to the Sheepmount is being maintained and the facilities there are fully operational. However the informal car park at the top of Mayor’s Drive is temporarily closed as it is being used as the contractor’s work compound.
The works are being delivered by local contractor Metcalfe Plant Hire Limited, with Cumberland Council working closely with regulatory authorities, statutory service providers, and community partners to ensure the project is completed safely and efficiently with minimal disruption.
