A programme of events is planned in the Cumberland area over May Bank Holiday weekend and during Spring.
Family friendly events are planned in a variety of locations and include:
Keswick market (Saturday 25 May)
Keswick market traders will be bringing a bit of country and western to their market stalls this Saturday (25 May) in support of a local charity.
As well as traders dressing for the occasion, they’ll be themed music, a Toy Story backdrop for photos and fancy-dress corner.
They’ll also be Jessie the Cowgirl and Woody Mascots, dancing Toy Story songs for the children and Lille old fashioned outdoor games - a prize every time.
Cowgirl Barbie will also make an appearance, with Barbie Box for photos.
Saloon Girl doing western tattoos and glitter paints and the chance to take part in a charity raffle.
Traders are going to raise as much money as we can for this year’s Keswick Market Designated Charity 2024.
Come along and support local traders as well as making charitable donations.
The market will be held on Saturday 25 May, between 9am and 5pm in Keswick market square.
Cumberland Cobbler Solway Coast Cycling Festival (Saturday 8 June)
The Cumberland Cobbler Solway Coast Cycling Festival will be held in the pretty seaside town of Silloth on Saturday 8 June, between 10am and 5pm.
This year sees a new route with more of the circuit on tarmac but this is still a tight, technically demanding course with a significant stretch of cobbles and a lot of corners to test your skills.
All cycling events are organised by Carlisle Cycling Association with support from British Cycling. The deadline to sign up is Saturday 25 May. Apply online.
Organised by Cumberland Council, the main festival activities will be held on Silloth Green.
This year’s event will include special guest GB cyclist Philip Hines, Crank It cycling activities including jump track, time trail course, skills challenge coaching and balance bike races, BMX showcase, fun fairs, live music and a producers’ market.
The event is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The remaining funds have been provided by SIIF and Cumberland Council.
This is the fourth time the Solway Coast Cycling Festival has taken place in Silloth, having previously been held in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Future events
Taste of the Sea festival in Maryport will be held on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August, then the flagship Taste Cumbria festival in Cockermouth on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September. Taste Cumbria Christmas on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December, also in Cockermouth, will end the year.
Other events planned in the Cumberland area this year include a Summer International Market in Carlisle between 22 and 26 August and Fireshow in Carlisle on Saturday 2 November.
Upperby Gala (Monday 27 May)
The community event in Carlisle planned for bank holiday Monday has been postponed due to saturated ground conditions.
Upperby Gala, was due to be held at Hammond’s Pond, Carlisle on Monday 27 May between 1pm and 4pm.
The recent weather conditions have resulted in the grounds being waterlogged and the event organiser, Cumberland Council, has taken the difficult decision to postpone the event to a date to be confirmed later this year.
A Cumberland Council spokesperson said:
“The health and safety of event participants and visitors is our main concern. We can’t go ahead with the event on Monday as the grounds within the venue are saturated and won’t allow access to install all the necessary infrastructure.
“We apologise for any disappointment and inconvenience this may cause.
“We will provide an update on the revised date as soon as it’s confirmed.”
The council is in the process of contacting event participants and stall holders.
