Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council are thrilled to announce Cumbria’s community rail projects have scooped two national awards and a Silver at the 2025 Community Rail Awards.

These tributes are a testament to the power of collaboration across the region, showcasing how creativity, accessibility, and community spirit are transforming our local railways.

One of the winning entries, Beyond the Home, was led by the Cumbrian Coast Line CRP and supported by the Northern Accessibility Innovation Scheme. The initiative worked with two Adult Day Services within Cumberland Council; Carlisle Day Services, and Allerdale & Copeland Day Opportunities—to co-create inclusive and visually engaging station displays. These feature Makaton symbols, artwork, and photographs to highlight local destinations. Participants also learned key travel skills, including journey planning, using ticket machines, and engaging with rail staff—boosting their confidence, independence, and connection to their local area.

Another standout project, a creative collaboration between Tyne Valley CRP, Community Rail Cumbria, and Carlisle-based Queer Cumbria, commissioned 23 original artworks by young LGBTQ+ artists. The vibrant pieces were installed at stations stretching from Dunston to Whitehaven, transforming them into colourful, inclusive spaces while also promoting awareness, dialogue, and representation along the line.

Both projects are now set to be extended across the Community Rail Cumbria network, creating even more opportunities to engage, empower, and inspire.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“Being shortlisted for seven national awards is a fantastic achievement, and to bring home two wins and a Silver is a true reflection of the energy and commitment across our Cumbrian Rail and station groups. These projects have not only empowered individuals—they’ve connected communities, inspired creativity, and made the railway a more inclusive space. I’m incredibly proud of everyone involved, especially our volunteers who keep the heart of community rail beating. Thank you for all that you do.”

Craig Harrop, Regional Director for Northern, said:

“We believe that train travel should be easier for everyone – but it is important that we continue that support once customers step off the train. By collaborating on projects like ‘Beyond the Home’ we’re helping to increase active and accessible travel along the Cumbrian Coast Line.”

Queer Cumbria added:

“We are really honoured to have won this award, especially with so many impactful and inspiring projects shortlisted. The Queer Rail Trail raised important voice and visibility for queer people and as well as platforming local artists, whilst allowing people to find support services via QR codes.

“We are grateful to the CRPs and Northern Trains Ltd for supporting us to create such a far-reaching project and we have no doubt that it will result in meaningful change for marginalised people well into the future.”

Eddie Pollock – Cumbrian Coast Line Chair said:

“What a fantastic team effort with such wonderful results. I am so impressed with everyone's contribution to this project and how perfectly it has turned out.”

The Community Rail Awards ceremony was a heart-warming celebration of dedication, creativity, and inclusion across the country. Cumbria’s success on the national stage reaffirms its place as a leading light in the community rail movement, where every person and idea have the opportunity to thrive.
