Devonshire Street to receive upgraded lighting as part of regeneration efforts

Devonshire Street completed regeneration

Cumberland Council is pleased to update residents and businesses on the latest developments in the final stages of the regeneration of Devonshire Street in Carlisle.

At the Planning Committee meeting (held on Wednesday 19 February), approvals were granted for the removal of six existing wall-mounted lights (three on each side of Devonshire Street). These outdated LED lamp units, along with their associated cabling and junction boxes, will be replaced with sleek, modern architectural lighting. The new system will feature external LED lighting bars designed to highlight the upper floors of the buildings, adding a striking visual element to the street's appearance.

The new lighting will highlight architectural details such as moulding, archways, and windows, up to two storeys high. Additional cabling will also be installed to support the new lighting system.

Funded by the UK Government’s Future High Street Fund, (£2,040,000 via Carlisle Future High Street) and United Utilities Green Recovery Funding (£250,000), this transformative project has introduced a range of improvements benefiting both the public and local businesses.

The funding investments have already brought numerous improvements to Devonshire Street, benefiting both the public and local businesses. Notable upgrades include wider pavements for better accessibility, new seating and greenery to create a welcoming atmosphere, cycle racks to encourage sustainable transport, a streamlined single-lane carriageway to improve traffic flow, and designated loading bays to support local businesses.

As part of these works to install the new lighting system, the installation will take place overnight, from Sunday 2 March for one week, between 8.00pm and 5.00am. During these hours, Devonshire Street will be closed to vehicles, but it will reopen by 5.00am each day. A full diversion route will be in place, clearly marked with signage, for more information please visit one network.

Devonshire Street will remain open for pedestrians with walkways provided.

The Carlisle regeneration projects continue to revitalise the city centre, making it a more vibrant, accessible, and attractive destination for residents and visitors alike.

Cumberland Council extends its thanks to the community for their patience and support as these exciting final touches are completed.
