Replacing Cumbria's gas pipes

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) and Cadent are replacing thousands of miles of ageing gas pipes across Cumberland. This network of pipes carries gas to homes, hospitals, schools, offices and many other buildings across the county. This project is part of a 30 year upgrade plan, which began in 2000.

Cadent and NGN

We are working closely with Cadent and NGN. The network is managed in:

  • the south of the county by Cadent in the Bootle and Millom area
  • the north of the county by NGN

To find out more about these upgrade read the NGN or Cadent websites:

What to expect if you are having gas works near you

If the works are part of this major upgrade programme and your property is directly impacted, you will receive information by letter several weeks before the project starts.

In some cases, Cadent or NGN may need to switch off your gas supply, to connect your property to the new gas main. Engineers employed by the companies will make sure that your supply is turned back on the same day it goes off. The engineer will check everything is working safely.

The benefit of the new gas pipes

The programme is helping us reach local and national targets to achieve 'net zero' carbon emissions, because:

  • clean gases such as hydrogen are now confirmed as an essential part of the energy mix for the UK
  • new pipes are much less likely to release methane into the atmosphere
