Before you apply

There are two types of signs:

• white signs, for road safety or traffic management reasons
• brown signs, for helping direct tourist traffic to tourist destinations 

How we evaluate your application

Your application will be judged against a set of eligibility criteria. Full details are in appendix 1, on page 16, of our guide to brown and white tourist signs.

We will also judge how the sign will affect:

• the visual impact of the area
• road safety 
• traffic management

Environmentally sensitive areas

In environmentally sensitive areas, particularly National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the impact of any new signing will be given special consideration. In such areas the emphasis is on minimising the amount of new signing.
