Public realm

From highway improvements, to new wayfinding signage, as well as a new pocket park - some great changes have been made to Maryport’s public realm.

In Senhouse Street, a key retail area, a new gateway has been created, removing cluttered street furniture and streamlining the on-street car parking. The Council also took the opportunity of the road closure to carry out stabilising works on the fire-damaged Bakehouse building. Contemporary style planters are also being installed to complete this part of the town’s regeneration.

Meanwhile three new off-street parking bays have been marked out at the top of Furnace Lane, just off Senhouse Street, so are ideally placed for people to visit the town’s main shopping area.

Elsewhere, at the junction of John Street and Crosby Street, a ‘pocket park’ has been created, giving people a place to sit and enjoy new planted areas. A set of historic horse-mounting steps have been retained as part of the scheme and a colourful new mural by Maryport artist Bethany Gray completes the space.

In addition, all across the town, new signage has been installed with finger posts pointing to the key areas and attractions, and map monoliths in strategic locations. Those monoliths also include an exclusive scene of Maryport created by artist Alan Roper with a distinctive ‘M’ design.

All the public realm improvements have been managed by Cumberland Council and made possible by Government funding.
