To renew your driver licence, you will need to complete the online application on the Licensing Portal.
Before submitting your application, make sure you have all the necessary information to hand.
Supporting evidence and documentation
Before you apply, check you have all the required documents.
You must submit your:
- valid DVLA photocard driving licence
- DVLA check code – view or share your driving licence information on GOV.UK
- valid UK passport or right to work share code – prove your right to work to an employer on GOV.UK
- DBS certificate number or Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) certificate
- completed medical form, if one is due
- tax check code, not your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) – complete a tax check for a taxi or private hire licence on GOV.UK
Submit all supporting evidence and documentation to the Former Allerdale Area, Taxi Licensing Team as soon as possible.
You can do this by:
- post to Allerdale House in Workington
- handing it into our reception team You do not need an appointment to submit this evidence.
We recommend submitting your application and evidence at least 2 weeks before your renewal date.
Check your DBS certificate status
Your subscription to the DBS Update Service must be in place and up to date.
If you have not joined or renewed your subscription to the Update Service, you will have to provide a new DBS certificate.
We are unable to accept scanned copies of a DBS certificate.
A licence will not be renewed until we have seen your DBS certificate.
Pay for your renewal
You can pay your taxi and private hire driver renewal fee by debit or credit card.

Your renewal application
We will only consider an application when:
- the online form has been submitted
- all required evidence has been submitted
- full payment has been made
Badges
When applying for a renewal, you must return your existing badge when collecting your new one.
You must return your badge immediately if:
- you are surrendering your licence
- you have been suspended
- it has been revoked
Renewal in special circumstances
There are some cases where you may not be able to renew your driver licence on time.
In these cases, you must:
- provide a valid reason that is deemed as an exceptional circumstance
- advice us of your circumstances at least 4 weeks in advance
- wait for approval from us, the legal team and the licensing committee
- follow the advised procedure, if approved
The licence will not be renewed:
- after it has expired
- if any supporting evidence or documentation is not up to date or available
A badge will not be issued until you have attended the office to have your photograph taken.
