Taxi and private hire passengers

How to tell the difference between a taxi, also known as hackney carriage and a private hire vehicle.

Taxi fares and charges: Allerdale

The fares and charges are for taxis which are licensed to collect passengers from a taxi rank and can be hailed in the street.

The rates of fares are applicable to journeys:

  • taken entirely within the Allerdale Borough
  • ending outside the Allerdale Borough where no fare or rate was agreed in advance of the journey between you and the driver

Distance

Tariff 1

If the distance:

  • does not exceed 1.6 kilometre (1 mile) for the whole distance - £3.50
  • exceeds 1.6 kilometre (1 mile), for the first 1.6 kilometre (1 mile) - £3.50

For each subsequent 0.32 kilometre (1/5th of a mile) or uncompleted part thereof - 50 pence

Waiting time

For each period of 3 minutes or uncompleted part thereof - 50 pence

Additional tariffs

Tariff 2

Hiring between 11pm and 6am (plus 51.43% of tariff 1) - £5.30

Tariff 3

Public holidays (all day) and any given in lieu of Boxing Day (plus 77.14% of tariff 1) - £6.20

Up to 6am on the day following a public holiday (plus 77.14% of tariff 1) - £6.20

Hiring between 6pm and midnight on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve (plus 77.14% of tariff 1) - £6.20

Tariff 4

Christmas day and New Year's day (plus 100% of tariff 1) - £7

Extra charges

Extra charges include:

  • 20 pence for each article of luggage carried outside the passenger compartment or the carriage
  • 55 pence for each person (in excess of 2)
  • £100 for leaving the taxi unfit (soiling) for immediate hire or damage to the taxi
