Cumberland Council is thrilled to continue its £1 million upgrade project on the A5086 in Frizington, aimed at improving road safety on the highway network.

The works have now entered the next phase, with the others shortly following which involves both two-way traffic lights and road closures.

Due to a burst water main, the following road closures and traffic management will be in place:

  • Wednesday 9 October to Thursday 10 October:
United Utilities will be working near Scallow Farm on the A5086. A road closure will be in operation from Kirkland Junction to Kelton Head. The highways team will be working at Frizington on the A5086 under 2-way traffic lights.

  • Friday 11 October to Sunday 13 October:
A full road closure will be in place from Church Street to the Frizington Household Waste Recycling Centre – HWRC (the tip), resuming from Friday through the weekend.

  • Monday 14 October to Saturday 19 October:
Phase 5 of the road improvement works will begin on Monday 14 October and is expected to finish by Saturday 19 October, with a road closure from the Frizington HWRC (the tip) to Kenmare Tyres, subject to weather conditions.

This means that access to the Frizington HWRC may be limited until Monday 21 October, between 7am and 7pm. While the HWRC will remain open, access cannot be guaranteed. As an alternative, please consider using Clay Flatts HWRC or Maryport HWRC. To find your nearest HWRC please visit the Cumberland Council website.

To minimise disruption to school commutes, school buses will have access during peak times from 7.45am to 8.30am and 3.00pm to 3.45pm.

Cumberland Council understands that these essential improvements may cause some short-term inconvenience, especially along such an important route. However, the end result will be well worth the wait.

The council kindly asks the community to remain patient and respectful toward staff working on the project and reminds every one of its zero-tolerance policy on threatening or abusive behaviour.

Cumberland Council wishes to thank the community for their continued support and patience while they improve the road network and apologise for any inconvenience.
