Cumberland Council is pleased to inform residents and businesses that Brampton and Cockermouth town centres will undergo a comprehensive deep cleaning programme.
The deep clean will start in Cockermouth on Monday 16 September and in Brampton on Monday 23 September, each lasting approximately one week. The focus will be to enhance the cleanliness and appearance of key streets in the town centre, creating a more welcoming environment for both locals and visitors.
The cleaning will focus on the following areas:
Cockermouth town centre – from Monday 16 September
- The Main Street B5292 from Sullart Street to Station Street
- Station Street (to traffic lights)
- Marketplace
Brampton town centre - from Monday 23 September
- Town centre area: Front Street (Gelt Road – Start of Craw Hall)
- Marketplace
- High Cross Street (following the completion of road works)
- Main Street (outside shops)
The street cleaning team will be using specialist equipment, including jet washers and mechanical sweepers, to remove chewing gum, ingrained dirt, and other debris from pavements and pedestrian areas. The goal is to significantly improve the appearance of these busy public spaces.
To minimise disruption to the public and local businesses, the work will be carefully managed with appropriate traffic control measures in place. Special attention will also be given to market days to ensure minimal inconvenience. The cleaning will be carried out in sections, allowing teams to inspect and tidy each area thoroughly before moving to the next.
As jet washing can create spray, especially near shop fronts, and the team will be taking extra precautions to maintain the cleanliness of frontages.
For any questions or concerns before or during the cleaning programme, please contact the Cumberland Council’s customer service centre during office hours at 0300 373 3730.
