Cumberland Council is pleased to announce further progress on the Carlisle Southern Gateway regeneration project.
Recent work has focused on installing new kerb lines, drainage systems, bus shelters, ducting, streetlights, and street furniture, alongside landscaping to enhance biodiversity and improve the city centre’s environment.
Funded by UK Government, the £6.6 million project forms part of the wider Southern Gateway initiative scheme which secured £19.7 million for improvements for Carlisle’s highways and pedestrian network.
A historic find
The project took an exciting turn with the unearthing of a historic well during excavation near the Citadel. Plans are already underway to incorporate the well into the pavement design, allowing pedestrians to view this unique relic and preserving an important part of Carlisle’s rich history. For safety, a temporary tarmac cover will be placed over the well until the specialised glass installation is complete.
Progress at English Street and Botchergate Junction
English Street is currently closed to traffic for around 16 weeks for essential drainage, duct crossings, and carriageway work. Pedestrian access is being maintained at all times, though walkways may change as work progresses. Please follow the signage and take care when navigating temporary routes.
At Botchergate Junction, significant progress includes the removal and backfilling of old public toilets and the use of temporary traffic measures to facilitate construction.
What’s next?
Upcoming construction work near The Griffin will include the installation of new kerb lines, improved drainage, paving, landscaping, a dedicated cycle path, and new seating areas. These improvements aim to create a more accessible and welcoming space for pedestrians and cyclists alike.
Cumberland Council urges residents and visitors to exercise caution while navigating the city centre during construction. Pedestrian access will remain available at all times, but walkways may change as work progresses. Watch for signage, follow temporary routes, and be mindful of heavy machinery and construction vehicles in the area.
Please follow posted warnings and follow directions from site personnel to ensure everyone’s safety during this period of significant progress.
Cumberland Council looks forward to continuing this transformative work and sharing future updates. Visit the council’s website for more details on the Carlisle regeneration projects
